The outdoor industry trade show Outdoor Retailer has landed in Denver after the event's organizers pulled out of Salt Lake City in protest of Utah's attempts to roll back public lands protections.
The biannual Outdoor Retailer is owned by Emerald Exhibitions but the Outdoor Industry Association is the title sponsor of the event. The organizers previously announced the winter show was moving to Denver after a deal was struck with Snowsports Industries of America to purchase its trade show and merge the two events. OIA announced Thursday the summer show was also moving to the Mile High City, starting in 2018.
"Colorado's elected officials have shown significant leadership in promoting policies that ensure the outdoor recreation economy continues to thrive," OIA Executive Director Amy Roberts said. "OIA looks forward to having our industry gathering contribute to Denver's economy and serve as a platform for collaboration that increases outdoor access and participation for all Americans."
The last Outdoor Retailer summer show in Salt Lake City will be held from July 25-29. Several prominent outdoor industry players have become increasingly frustrated in recent years by Utah's efforts to convince the federal government to cede control of its vast Western public lands holdings to the states, potentially opening the lands to more private development and resource extraction.
Tensions between Utah lawmakers and the outdoor industry recently came to a head over the fate of Bears Ears National Monument, which is located in the state. The Trump administration has proposed scaling back the size of the monument in response to concerns by Utah lawmakers. The outdoor industry supports leaving the protected area as is.
OIA is planning a protest march on the Utah State Capitol during this year's Outdoor Retailer event to show support for protecting public lands. http://bit.ly/2uSnXgw
